In a joint concert last Saturday evening (20th October) The Brixham Orpheus Male Voice along with their guests, Quay Harmony Ladies Choir raised the roof at their concert in St Andrews Church, Paignton. In aid of Church Funds, the audience were treated to a full programme of music and song. In addition, local soloist Graham Carter sang some varied pieces from his own repertoire of music. Chairman of the Orpheus said, ‘It is always a pleasure to return to our Paignton home and sing in this wonderful church. This time it was even more special to be joined by Quay Harmony and it was lovely that those who came could enjoy such an eclectic mix of music chosen by both choirs Musical Directors, Ron Burrington and Jane Anderson-Brown.
On Monday 17th September, All Saints Church was almost filled with friends and relatives who wanted to say goodbye to Frances Silman. Martyn Hodge conducted a very appropriate funeral service for Frances, a service full of singing with 3 hymns and contributions from The Riviera Singers of which Frances was a member and the Brixham Orpheus Male Voice choir of which Frances’s husband Roy is a long serving member. We will always remember Frances for her smile and her favourite saying “I’m fine”.

Last night (22nd Sep 2018) the people of Brixham were blessed with performances from the Linden Singers Ladies Choir from Torfaen, Pontypool in South Wales. Defying the beginning of the ‘Strictly’ season, the audience weren’t disappointed by the melodies and songs from this premier division welsh choir. The concert was held in St Mary’s Church, Higher Brixham, in aid of church funds and the ladies were the guests of the Brixham Orpheus Male Voice Choir. The Orpheus enjoy holding concerts with other local choirs but to host a group of ladies such as these, was an honour and a privilege and with their wide range of music they were just a joy to listen too. The concert goers also enjoyed listening to local soloist Jan Lobb and her rendition of ‘Your Daddy’s Son’ from the musical ‘Ragtime’ was a complete heart stopper.
The Orpheus travel to Paignton for their next concert on Saturday 20 October at 7.00pm in St Andrews Church, Paignton when they will be joined by the Quay Harmony Ladies Choir and local soloist Graham Carter. Tickets at £5.00 in advance or £8.00 on the door are now available tel: 01803 850642 or visit Keeping Pets, 31 Bolton Street, Brixham.

It is with great sadness that I share the sad news relating to the details of a former choir member as well as the loss of the wife of one of our long serving choir members.
Fred Tucker was a long serving member of the choir and a well-respected member of the bass section. His love of singing carried on after he left Brixham when he moved to South Wales where he joined the Risca Male choir and thus created a link between the two choirs. His unfortunate demise in a recent car crash will be a great sadness to those who knew him. His funeral is on Friday 21 September 2018 in Gwent Crematorium, Treherbert Road, Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran, NP44 2PZ at 13.00pm. Our thoughts and prayers are with Fred’s family and friends at this sad time.
Frances Silman. News came today that Frances died in her sleep this morning soon after 3.00am. Frances had been in Torbay Hospital under observation for heart problems but had returned home on Thursday as she was responding well to changes in her medication. Frances and Roy had spent a life time together, being huge supporters of both the Riviera Singers and the BOMVC. She was known for her wonderful smile and cheery banter and was always there to support a choir activity or event in one form or another. Despite her ailments in recent years she never let these get her down and was an example to us all. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

The Brixham Orpheus Male Voice Choir have been busy over the last few weeks raising funds for local good causes. Over the last few weeks they have performed every Wednesday evening down under the Old Fish Market on Brixham Harbour. Joined by the local shanty lads ‘Missin’ Tackle’, a total of over £700.00 has been collected for Pride in Brixham, 1st Brixham Boys Brigade and the Torbay Branch of Parkinson’s UK on the three consecutive weeks that they sang on the harbour side for an hour on each occasion.
In addition, they were the guests of Brixham Town Band at their annual Proms night in aid of Brixham Does Care. This very worthy local charity was able to collect just over £360.00 during the concert. As in previous years the gathered throng were in full voice with rousing renditions of Proms favourites ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘Land of Hope & Glory’.
On the last Saturday in July at their Saturday coffee morning £344.00 was raised for choir funds. As we have enjoyed our hot summer weather, we were really pleased that so many people came along with new faces as well as our regulars to serve. Such mornings are of course more than serving coffee and the sale of books, cakes, plants and bric-a-brac all help with our fund-raising efforts. As this point I must thank all those helpers on the day, be they choir members, wives & partners or choir friends. Your help before, during and after makes a real difference to those who organise the morning.
So for those of you with a mathematical and a financial mind, the choir have raised £1444.92 in three weeks which is a fantastic achievement and one that the BOMVC can be proud of.
The choir now take a short break before their next concert in St Marys Church, Higher Brixham on Saturday 22 September 2018 at 7.00pm when they will be joined by the Linden Singers Ladies Choir from Torfaen, Pontypool, South Wales. In aid of Church funds, tickets are £5.00 in advance tel: 01803 850642 or from Keeping Pets, 31 Bolton Street, Brixham, TQ5 9BZ or at £8.00 on the door.
